Blue velvet furniture is reminiscent of so many beautiful things – serene mountain landscapes, the deep blue sea and Kate Middleton’s royal sapphire ring, just to name a few. The color blue is welcoming and calming, and it pairs well with pretty much any other color you can name – black, white, gray, orange, pink, green, yellow, tan and more. It goes with so many colors that it might as well be called a neutral. Blues also pop well against wood materials and metallic finishes. Combine the versatility of this color with the sumptuous quality of velvet, which quickly gives any space a touch of regal sophistication, and you have a pretty irresistible piece of furniture.

Martin moved operations to the United States in 1898 and continued its tradition of creating sumptuous, soft velvets in a wide range of bold colors.

To create a designer space on a reasonable budget, a mix of high and low was used throughout the redesign. A seven foot tall headboard was custom made from six yards of a woven fabric picked up at a discount fabric store for $12 per yard. Overall, the bed ensemble is masculine, including a navy blue sateen duvet, pinstripe pillow shams and throw pillows featuring a tone-on-tone geometric print, as well as a traditional zig-zag pattern. To balance the height of the headboard, a pair of black French demilune tables (picked up at the outlet of a high-end European furnishings retailer) was used rather than standard night stands. For proper illumination with vintage flair, the tables were topped with ceramic mid-century modern lamps updated with a sprayed coat of semi-gloss latex paint.
